Races to watch

These races were deemed competitive by The Huffington Post based on polling and research. Each row of races is labeled with the pre-election outlook.

Outlook

All races

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for election every two years. The number of seats allocated to each state is determined by its population. Because of redistricting, many representatives are running in new districts.

About the Presidential Race
What to Watch

Texas will be Mitt Romney’s largest electoral prize in 2012, and Ted Cruz (R) should have no trouble winning the state’s open Senate race. The race to watch is in the 23rd congressional district, where Pete Gallego (D) is trying to unseat freshman Rep. Quico Canseco (R).

Voter Suppression

Texas has restricted voter registration drives. 532,487 felons, the highest number of any state after Florida, were restricted from voting by felon disenfranchisement laws in 2010.

Compare with 2008 Winner: McCain
Counties above the diagonal line are where Obama is doing better than in 2008.
